A record sale was made on Vortex Auction Montreal’s platform by Sotheby’s
A version of The Scream - a pastel painting of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch - was sold on Wednesday evening at Sotheby’s New York for the astounding amount of 119, 92 million dollars, thus becoming the highest-priced artwork to ever sell at auction. Another record was also made, this time in terms of worldwide attendance on the Vortex Auction platform.
Sotheby’s and Bid Now Web’s auction sale only lasted twelve minutes but it created quite a stir; in fact, auctions sometimes reached up to 10 million dollars.
The pastel - painted in 1895 and representing a screaming man with his hands on his ears against a bloody sky backdrop in Olso – was the only version out of four of The Scream still held by in individual.
The auction ended with enthusiasm as auctioneer Tobias Meyer announced it to be a "worldwide record".
